July is the most vibrant time of the year in Kyoto, as it marks the season of the Gion Festival. Known as one of Japan's three major festivals, the Gion Festival is held for about a month, centered around Yasaka Shrine. During this period, the streets of Kyoto are adorned with beautiful floats called "Yamahoko," and traditional music and dance fill the air.

The Origin of the Gion Festival

The Gion Festival is said to have begun in the Heian period as a prayer to ward off epidemics. Today, it is cherished by many as a festival that not only prays for the end of epidemics but also for a bountiful harvest, commercial prosperity, and peace. With its spectacular Yamahoko procession and the enchanting Yoiyama night festivities, there are plenty of sights to see.
